I look at this image and realize that, in a way, we really haven't learned that much more about humans than we knew then. Sure we have made many technological advances and can, in many cases, prevent and even cure disease. But in all of the intervening years the only thing we can say about each other for sure is that we know where our livers are, where our bowels are, our hearts, our brains. These very things that make us all equal, equally bound to an inescapable humanity...yet go unseen and therefore forgotten.

Maybe I'm not quite ready to put this train of thought into words, though.

I was just struck when I looked at this image from so long ago...how long we have known the simple truths about human biological form and function, yet have remained so unequivocally enchanted with our external differences. There's something to that, I think.

Last night I had a dream that Simba died.

In the dream he was writhing on the floor and his belly started to distend until it burst open exposing all of his internal organs. Everything seemed to be in order with the exception of some green tubular material present in front of the cecum and appendix in the lower right quadrant of his abdomen. In the dream this wasn't out of the ordinary, though.

When his stomach opened, I knelt down and successfully closed him back up like a purse or a clam shell. I yelled to Phillip, 'we have to get him to a doctor!' but he had left the room. He came back in and told me that we shouldn't let him suffer. I said something to the effect of 'what do you mean?' and then I looked at him, at Simba. He was staring at the ceiling, had obviously gone into shock and was about to die. I held him and was overtaken by a palpable sadness.

I woke up distressed and started thinking about my mom and my sister. Both of them had lost dogs in the past year and had to have them put to sleep. Then I thought about the inevitable which I suppose I never choose to think about - Simba will almost certainly die within the next 5-8 years. Will I one day be in a vet's office holding Simba while he dies from a lethal injection? The thought was so painful that I started to cry and I had to get up at 4am in order to distract myself from thinking about it.

....

These are trying times. I suppose I am on the verge of something. It's funny how you can go along thinking everything is fine and reasonable and secure and then, bam!, life is laughing in your face. I'm so good at the game of self-deception. In fact, I am possibly the only person who can get something over on me...I know all my weak spots. Namely, my need for quiet and normalcy. Peace and security. And I will pursue them, even create them in a vacuum.

Is it that I don't deserve to have them?
Do my actions preclude me from having them?
Or does the tone of my own personal energy and thoughts drive them away?

Eventually, though, I wind up in the same place.
Picking up the pieces of an inevitable loss.

Perhaps my dream was more of a statement about loss and how I will try to hold it together even when everything is dying around me - ignoring repeated calls to let it go, don't prolong the suffering.

I didn't see this coming.

I've been watching 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' episodes from the beginning with Phillip. We have just launched into season two.

I'm really enjoying the show, even though the earlier episodes were pretty goofy. The writing is progressively getting better.

Jonathan Frakes, though, what a character. He acts like a cross between Tim Curry and Theda Bara.

Gotta love Commander William T. Riker. :-)

Tonight I laid down to sleep but was kept awake by a sudden flood of memory and emotion.

On a Saturday evening about two months ago my nine-year-old daughter went missing for about four hours.

That night I felt what I can only describe as an excruciating lack of sensation. I knew there was pain, but it could not penetrate the lead that had formed around my insides. My mind was full of images of her afraid and wanting me and these thoughts made me cringe with the most palpable, inescapable fear. Pure, unadulterated amygdala. I didn't feel capable of walking or talking or of ever experiencing any other feeling ever again. It was really quite indescribable in words.

She turned up and was fine, but it took me the better part of a week to get over the trauma. And I thought I had put it behind me...perhaps not. Seems I have to live with these memories.

I feel a little better having written this down tonight, though. Maybe I can sleep now.

Various Dylan forums are abuzz with alarms, rumors, and excursions in the night that a new Dylan studio album is prepared for imminent release, perhaps as early as the end of April `09.

First report was over at Michael Gray's "Bob Dylan Encyclopedia" site, which said in full...

A new Dylan studio album, which, it had been whispered, was tentatively planned for the autumn may now be in the works for earlier release, perhaps even in time to coincide with Bob's upcoming European tour. I can't say more. I would if I could.

Another source,connected to the U.K. promoters who regularly work with Dylan's people, also began posting in the Expecting Rain forums that the new album was indeed fact, and recently (February 12th) claimed that Jeff Rosen (Dylan's business manager, producer of Tell Tale Signs, et al;) brought the new album to London for a private airing for Sony U.K. execs. and that at the end of the listening session, "...Sony staff were told to go and prepare for an end of April release."

And over the weekend, the on-line Dylan Digest from ISIS magazine released the following...

a completely new Bob Dylan album is in the can. Our understanding is that the album was recorded last October in California (maybe with the recording sessions starting slightly earlier than that). The sequencing of the tracks was completed in January and the album is expected to contain ten tracks.

Jeff Rosen has brought the finished album to Europe for listening sessions in various cities including London, Munich and Oslo. These “listenings” were mainly for sales and marketing staff at Sony. We must assume that similar sessions have taken place in the United States. Several different titles have been put forward for the album but, for the most part, these seem to be little more than internet babble and at the time of the listenings (mid February) no title had been decided upon. At one time, it was suggested that the album would be released in the autumn, then a release date in May 2009 was mentioned but it seems that the release has now been brought forward to the last week of April, to coincide with later stages of Dylan’s forthcoming European tour. There are strong rumours about the circumstances in which the album came about (See entry for “My Own Love Song” below). There are also rumours that the musicians on the album are not all from the current touring band.

As the Dylan Digest excerpt notes, one prevalent theory gaining credibility is that the album is either partially or completely a Dylan-composed soundtrack for a new Oliver Dahan movie, titled My Own Love Song, starring Renée Zellweger and Forest Whitaker. While the IMDB doesn't have any information about the movie's soundtrack, several European media outlets have noted over the past several months that Dylan indeed composed it.

Given that the reports are true - which is at this point is still a large given - 2009 is shaping up to be an excellent year for Bob Dylan fans, with the possibility of a release of Chronicles: Volume Two; the Hank Williams Project also slated for release; and now this new studio album.

today i learned that the business tax responsibility that i took on at work is much more complicated than i originally thought...and that it is compounded to an alarming extent by neglect...yay job security.

I will be getting the Boo a dog for Christmas.

But I'm afraid I may be using it as an excuse to get a Scottie for myself. I have met exactly two Scottish Terriers in my life and they were both the sweetest, most affectionate and most laid back dogs I had ever met. With the exception of a couple of Rottweilers, but I can't get one of those.

What is Rat-bite fever?
Rat-bite fever (RBF) is an infectious disease caused by two different organisms, Streptobacillus moniliformis and Spirillum minus. In the United States, Rat-bite fever is primarily due to infection with S. moniliformis. Spirillum minus causes Rat-bite fever cases in countries such as Asia and Africa.

How common is Rat-bite fever in humans in the United States?
Rat-bite fever is rare in the United States. However, since RBF is not a notifiable disease, exact numbers of cases are not known.

How is infection spread to humans?
Rat-bite fever refers to an infection which usually develops after having been bitten or scratched by an infected rat. Other rodents (such as mice and gerbils) may also spread the infection to humans.
Sometimes infection can result from handling infected rats, with no reported bite or scratch.
It is also possible to become infected by ingesting food or drink (such as milk or water) contaminated with rat excrement. This form of the disease is sometimes referred to as Haverhill fever.

Who is at risk for infection?
Persons who are at risk for infection include those who work with animals in labs or pet stores and persons living in dwellings infested with wild rats. People who have pet rats may also be at risk for infection.

What are the signs and symptoms?
Symptoms usually occur 2-10 days after exposure to an infected animal. Common symptoms include an abrupt onset of chills and fever, vomiting, pain in the back and joints, headache and muscle pain. By this time, the wound itself has usually already healed. Within 2-4 days after the onset of fever, a rash appears on the hands and feet. One or more large joints may then become swollen, red, and painful.

What should I do if I think I may have Rat-bite fever?
Please contact your health care provider immediately if you have been in contact with a rat and think you may be experiencing symptoms related to Rat-bite fever. Report your rat exposure to your health care provider.

Will my family get Rat-bite fever from me?
No. Rat-bite fever is NOT transmitted from person to person. You can only get infected from an infected animal, typically through a bite or scratch.

Can I get infected by my pet rat?
Yes. Some recent cases in the United States have occurred in people with pet rats.

Is treatment available?
Yes. Rat-bite fever can be treated with antibiotics. Treatment is highly effective. Penicillin is the antibiotic of choice. If you are allergic to penicillins, erythromycin may be given to you.
Without treatment, Rat-bite fever due to S. moniliformis , which is found in the United States, can result in extremely serious and potentially fatal complications.

What should I do to prevent Rat-bite fever?
1. Avoid contact with rats or rat-contaminated dwellings. In addition to Rat-bite fever, contact with rodents, rodent droppings, and dead rodents may result in other infectious diseases. More information on rodent control in and around the house
2. If you cannot avoid contact with rats, wear protective gloves, practice regular handwashing and avoid hand-to-mouth contact when handling rats or cleaning rat cages.
3. Because you can also get infected with Rat-bite fever after drinking contaminated milk or water, drink pasteurized milk and water from safe sources.

I just found out this evening that my swapadvd wish came true. I'm getting The Bicycle Thief.

err, if you happen upon this clip and plan to watch the whole film some day, don't view it - it will give away the ending.

Watching this again, the first time in many years, I am struck by the power in these last eight minutes. Very little dialogue - the events unfold on the faces of the father and son. Heartbreaking.

It's All About Eve...

I am watching it this afternoon for about the gazillionth time. This film has some of the greatest dialogue ever written for the screen. I love Bette Davis in this film - she is luminous and smart and funny and a bit of a self-indulgent bitch, yes, but also vulnerable and sweet when her guard is down. In an era that didn't really appreciate complex, sexual, powerful women, the full realization of this character is characteristic of what made Bette Davis one of the greatest actresses of all time (and certainly the greatest of her own time) - too few people these days realize just how special she was. Along with The Little Foxes, All About Eve is one of my favorite Bette Davis films.

Plus it features the incomparable George Sanders. I could sit and watch him read the phone book for days.

Sounds mysterious, even impossible, and yet the eye is one of a pair of special sense organs that converts the energy of light into electrical nerve impulses and transmits those signals to the brain where they're interpreted as sight.

As we now know, light rays enter the eye and are refracted by the cornea, aqueous humor, lens, and vitreous humor. The rays are focused on the retina where they stimulate the rods and cones, causing chemical changes and producing impulses. These impulses are conveyed along the optic nerves to the optic chiasm. At this juncture, fibers from each optic nerve cross over to the other side. Fibers from the left visual field of each eye form the left optic tract. Impulses move along these fibers to the left visual cortex in the occipital lobe—an area in the posterior of the brain where visual stimuli is interpreted.

Fibers from the right visual fields form the right optic tract and transmit impulses to the right occipital cortex. When these images from both eyes fuse in the brain, they produce a single 3-D image, the result being called binocular vision. Convergence is the movement of the eyes in unison toward a common point of fixation. It is because of convergence that we have binocular vision, the ability to see one image using both eyes.

Driving home from work yesterday I was listening one of the local college stations and they played this song, the first time I ever heard it on the radio:

This one song, the first time I heard it - leading off one of the greatest rap (and political) albums of all time, Fear of a Black Planet - I was mesmerized. I was shaken by the sound and, especially, by the power of the lyrics. Things my lily-white ass had never heard a black person saying before. At least not in rap music. I spent the next hour or so sitting by my stereo with the lyrics booklet reading along with each song. It struck me as poetry - very truthful and candid political poetry.

I couldn't find a top to go with my black skirt this morning so I went into my daughter's room and borrowed one that she had left behind. When I put it on I thought it was very flattering...if maybe a little low cut, but not inappropriately so. Actually, I think it makes my (to quote my mother) bosoms look fabulous! I really love my new (naturally) larger bosoms. I love the way they feel, I love the way they look. I just love 'em. :)

but, I digress...

When I got to work today, it didn't take long to realize that every person, man and woman, that I talked to or passed by in the office was taking a look at my tits. It made me very uncomfortable and made me wish I hadn't worn such a fabulous top to work.

Which got me to thinking about my reaction to getting attention while I am at work. I hate it. I've always been this way to some extent, but I feel it even moreso now and I am not sure whether it is me or this particular environment. Reminds of when Phillip sent roses to me at the office for my birthday. I was delighted to get them, but at the same time, that walk back to my cube from the reception area was...I dont know, embarrassing. I have a compulsion to be invisible there which I don't understand. I don't feel this way anywhere else. I wouldn't have thought twice about wearing this top out shopping or to run errands - whether people looked at me or not - wouldn't phase me at all.

For the first time in my history of office-work, I am happy to be working in an enclosed cube. I feel insulated from the office in there - and I can just do my work, not be bothered and leave without being seen.

It's not as if I don't like the people, they're alright for the most part (except for the loud, obnoxious Republican across from my cube - I can pretty much say I don't like him) but no single person there makes me feel uncomfortable...it's the whole place.

Anyway, the good thing about going into nursing, I think, is the fact that it is more like a labor job than an office job. You can lose yourself in labor and concentrate on what you need to do without all of the distorted dynamics that seem to be generated by people sitting in chairs, working on computers and 'visiting' all day. That and the scrubs. I can't wait until the most daring wardrobe choice I have to make is whether to wear the burgundy or the navy blue scrubs to work that day.

Just 2 1/2 more years....sigh.

So it's finally over. I watched the finale of The Sopranos last night and I wasn't disappointed. The last couple of seasons were a real cinematic death march for me, though. I grew to despise everyone on the show...everyone that was left that is. With the exception of Bobby Baccalieri - his character possessed the only beacon of likability - honesty, compassion, conscience - in the entire six seasons of the show. And Tony realized that...and was jealous of it. Now that I think about it, Bobby possessed the qualities that Tony pretended to have - with his famiy, his therapist, his 'cumares.' Which is why he tried to rob Bobby of it (grrrr...remembering the French-Canadian in the laundromat).

Yes, I pretty much ended up hating everyone on that show: Paulie with his whining and paranoia, Sil for killing Adriana the way he did, Christopher for letting him kill Adriana the way he did, Meadow for her mind-boggling naivete about her father (how could a mafia daughter decide to go to law school without even a hint of irony?), Carmela and Anthony, Jr., too, for that matter. All the other members of Tony's family, the New York Family, all the wives and children, Dr. Melfi...I hated them all.

That's not to say that I didn't 'like' the show. It's a brilliant show with wonderful performances and I have an immense respect for James Gandolfini that I didn't have before. I appreciate how good it is. I just didn't enjoy the last couple of seasons. I was talking to my daughter's boyfriend about it last night and I described it as thus: imagine 'There Will Be Blood'...now imagine it lasting for SIX YEARS.' That sums it up pretty well.

As for the ending, I wasn't disappointed. My initial idea for a perfect ending was for the entire cast to die in a raging fire while attending a huge Italian wedding. But that last shot with Tony's apprehensive, uncertain face was good enough for me. Yeah he lives...but for what? Fear and anxiety for the rest of his days.

Yeah. That's about right.
